ABOUT
LIFEBOAT
: Lifeboat is a 1944 American survival film directed by Alfred Hitchcock from a story by John Steinbeck. The film stars Tallulah Bankhead, William Bendix, Walter Slezak, Mary Anderson, John Hodiak, Henry Hull, Heather Angel, Hume Cronyn and Canada Lee. It is set entirely on a lifeboat launched from a passenger vessel torpedoed and sunk by a Nazi U-boat.
The film is the first in Hitchcock's "limited-setting" films, the others being Rope (1948), Dial M for Murder (1954), and Rear Window (1954). It is the only film Hitchcock made for 20th Century Fox. The film received three Oscar nominations for Best Director, Best Original Story and Best Cinematography – Black and White. Tallulah Bankhead won the New York Film Critics Circle award for best actress of the year. Though highly controversial in its time for what many interpreted as its sympathetic depiction of a German U-boat captain, Lifeboat is now viewed more favorably and has been listed by several modern critics as one of Hitchcock's more underrated films
ABOUT KEYBOOK STILLS
: "Keybook stills" were created by the studio. The studios would take pictures of absolutely everything (the sets, the actors in costume, each and very scene, etc). These "keybook stills" were placed into notebooks in two different formats: (1) they would use a three hole-punch in the stills and put them in the binders that way or (2) they mounted them on linen in an effort to keep them from damage due to constant wear. The studios did this because when they needed to refer to how something should look, they would have these great sets of stills to use as a reference. They often used the keybook stills to determine exactly how the actors were dressed, where they were standing, etc. KEYBOOK STILLS were often disposed of by the studio. They are rare because the studios only created a handful of these KEYBOOK STILL books for each film; they were not released to the media; always used in-house.
