The most interesting item in this archive is the personal diary of J.Lewis Willets from the year 1948 as Head Foreman at the Isabella Mines. His struggles with workers, union thugs and avoiding disaster are noted throughout the diary. He also keeps a record of personal and business travels and notes on April 20th he went to Forbes Field in Pittsburgh to watch Opening Day as the Pirates beat the Cubs 3-2. Though the emphasis of the diary is the violent nature of the job itself, He notes on a number of occasions how men are fighting ,receiving threats from miners and Union bosses and handling chronic employee resignations. The archive in general offers a rare glimpse into the volatile world of coal mining during the depression and post World War 2.
