Description
Two pieces of old cast copper assay ingots, probably made at the former White Pine copper mine at White Pine, Michigan.I think they came from there, but there is a chance they came from the Keweenaw and are older; they look like they were buried in the ground for some time.
These were used for assay purposes; the larger piece has holes drilled into it, but not completely through.
The smaller measures about 2-3/4 by 3 inches and the big one is 2-3/4 by 5 inches; they are about an inch thick and weigh a total of 6.6 pounds.
I have not attempted to clean them except with soapy water.
These were being poured up until 1982 when the mine began producing pure copper by the electrolytic process.
See my book for pictures and information,
White Pine Copper: An Illustrated History of the Mine and Its Ingots.
This book is available from my ebay store.
The White Pine mine produced over 4 billion pounds of copper and 45 million ounces of silver from 1955 to 1995.
