    Description

    This auction is for an antique German porcelain beerstein from the late 1800s. This tankard is a bulbous Bartmann krug style with arelief star design on the front. Old man face of Gambrinus at the picturesspout area. Rare cobalt blue and white colors as most are a brown and white glaze.
    This jug has the KPM scepter mark on the bottom. It stands 12.5inches tall and 7 inches in diameter at the widest point. This is probably 1.5liters in capacity.
    Pewter metal lid witha round ball thumblift.

    According to Wikipedia, a Bartmann jug (from GermanBartmann, "bearded man"), also called Bellarmine jug, is a type ofdecorated salt-glazed stoneware that was manufactured in Europe throughout the16th and 17th centuries, especially in the Cologne region in what is todaywestern Germany. The signature decorative detail was a bearded face maskappearing on the lower neck of the vessel. They were made as jugs, bottles andpitchers in various sizes and for a multitude of uses, including storage offood or drink, decanting wine and transporting goods
